With reference to our talk on the 16th of

January about the emoluments of Audit Officers in

Hong Kong, I desire to make it clear that I

cannot regard the scales mentioned in the Vacancy

Form sent me on 20652/9 as satisfactory.

Hitherto there have been :-

2 Assistant Auditors on £800-£50-£1,050.

1 Assistant Auditor on £450-2£50-£700.

I agreed in my memorandum of the 19th of

October 1936 (53723/36 Hong Kong) that this should

be altered to :

2 Senior Assistant Auditors on £800-£30-£920

with local allowance of £50 (or $840) a year

rising to £100 (or $1,680) after one year

on £920 salary.

1 Assistant Auditor on £460, £460, £520,

£570-£25-£670, £700, with local allowance

of £50 (or $840) a year from £520 inclusive.

But I proposed that when a vacancy occurred

in the Senior Assistant Auditor grade the establish-

ment should be altered to

1 Senior Assistant Auditor on £900-£50-£1,000

with local allowance at the rate of £100

(or $1,680).

2 Assistant Auditors on £460, 2460, £520,

£570-£25-£670, £700, £760-£30-£820 with

local allowance of £50 (or $840) from £520;

and I explained why I made those recommendations.
